Neighbourly ("we", "our", or "us") operates the Neighbourly mobile application (the "App") and the website at neighbourly.box (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our Service.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information. When you create an account, we collect your username, display name, password (stored securely hashed), and household name.

Location Data. The App may collect your device's GPS coordinates to display your household on the neighbourhood map and to define neighbourhood boundaries. Location data is only collected when you explicitly use location-based features.

User Content. We store items you post (donations, barters, sales, events, skill shares, needs, requests, and reminders), chat messages, and any images you upload.

Device Information. We may collect basic device information such as device type, operating system version, and app version for diagnostics and compatibility purposes.

Mesh Networking Data. If you use the Meshtastic mesh networking feature, the App communicates with nearby IoT devices over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and LoRa radio. Messages sent over the mesh network are transmitted peer-to-peer and are not stored on our servers.

Smart Box Data. If you interact with Neighbourly Smart Boxes, the App exchanges data with the box hardware via MQTT and BLE, including box state and access tokens.

2. How We Use Your Information

To provide and maintain the Service, including displaying your household, items, and neighbourhood on the map.
To enable communication between neighbours through chat and mesh channels.
To manage household membership and item sharing.
To improve, troubleshoot, and optimise the App.
To send you service-related notifications.

3. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. Your information may be shared in the following limited circumstances:

With your neighbours. Your username, household name, and items you post are visible to other users in your neighbourhood. This is core to how the Service works.
Service providers. We may use third-party services for hosting and infrastructure that process data on our behalf.
Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users.

4. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on servers we operate. We implement reasonable security measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS), hashed passwords, and access controls. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage is 100% secure.

5. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will remove your personal data within a reasonable timeframe. Some data may be retained in backups for a limited period.

6. Your Rights

You have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you.
Request correction of inaccurate data.
Request deletion of your account and associated data.
Withdraw consent for location data collection by disabling location permissions on your device.

7. Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.

8. Third-Party Services

The App may interact with third-party hardware and services (such as Meshtastic devices). These third-party services have their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to review them.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by posting the updated policy within the App or on our website. Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
